Big hearts can come in pint-sized packages.Six-year-old Jordan Smith’s brown eyes twinkle when she talks about her letter.
The daughter of Doug and Kim Smith of Hurley dictated the letter to her mother so she can raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Kim is captain of the Magnolia Springs Assembly of God Church team for the East Central Relay and Jordan is currently the top fundraiser with $265.
Jordan sent out about nine printed letters, which she addressed herself. There’s a picture of a smiling Jordan hugging her grandfather, Joe Davis, who died in July. They included self-addressed stamped envelopes to make the giving easier.
Her letter:
“I’m going to walk a really long way on April 24, 2009, in Relay for Life. It’s to get money to fight a yucky bug called cancer. My PawPaw Joe got cancer and now he’s in Heaven. The doctors gave him lots of medicine, but they didn’t have the right one, so I’m going to give them money so they can find the medicine that will make cancer go away. Will you please help me? You can send me a check, like my mommy uses a lot, or you can give money online, kind of like when I use the computer to visit Disney Channel.
Thank you,
Jordan

Jordan’s plea touched her family and checks started coming in.
She loves to see her name on the Relay web site (www.relayforlife.org/hurley).
“Everybody’s name is down,” she said. “Mine is at the top!”
Kim Smith said she’d known people with cancer, but when her father died it touched her personally. “To see it up close, to see how much it changes a person’s life, it’s devastating,” she said.
